What is Underpinning?
Underpinning is a term used in construction to describe a process of strengthening the foundation of a building. It involves the installation of additional support, either by excavating the existing foundation or by installing new support structures beneath it. Underpinning is typicallyused to address structural issues such as settling or cracking in the foundation, or to increase the load-bearing capacity of the foundation in order to support additional weight.
When Do You Need Underpinning?
You may need underpinning if you notice:
- Cracks in walls, ceilings, or floors
- Uneven or sloping floors
- Doors and windows sticking or misaligned
- Gaps between skirting boards and floors
- Past excavation or nearby construction causing soil movement
