Basement Garage Construction Process in Sydney

1. Site Survey and Geotechnical Report
Before any excavation begins, we carry out a thorough site survey and commission a geotechnical investigation. Test bores are drilled to confirm soil type, water table depth, and bearing capacity. This report drives every structural and waterproofing decision that follows, ensuring a foundation for a well-built basement garage.
2. Excavation and Shoring
Excavation is carried out using equipment suited to your site's access and soil conditions. Shoring is installed as we dig to protect neighbouring structures, retain surrounding soil, and keep the worksite safe throughout the process. On tighter Sydney lots, this stage requires careful sequencing and coordination.
3. Formwork and Waterproof Tanking
Once the excavation is complete, formwork is set, and a waterproof tanking membrane is applied before concrete is poured. Getting the waterproofing right at this stage is critical. It's far easier to do it properly now than to fix moisture issues after the slab is down.
4. Reinforced Concrete Slab Pour
The structural slab is poured to engineering specifications using reinforced concrete. Curing time is managed carefully to ensure the slab reaches its design strength before the next stage begins.
5. Retaining Wall and Column Lift
Retaining walls are constructed to hold back the surrounding earth and support the structure above. Columns are lifted and tied into the slab and roof structure as required by the structural engineer's design. This is also the stage where underpinning may be required if adjacent footings are close to the excavation zone.
6. Driveway Ramp and Entry Portal
The driveway ramp is formed and poured to the required gradient for safe vehicle access. The entry portal, including the headroom clearance, kerb transitions, and drainage, is built to comply with AS 2890.1 off-street parking standards. If a structural wall removal is needed to create the entry opening, we handle that within the same scope.
7. Weatherproofing and Handover
External waterproofing, drainage channels, and surface finishes are completed before handover. Our basement car park builders will walk you through the garage, drainage points, and access systems so you know exactly what's been built and how to maintain it.
